S.W.A.T. On the Move in Clay County

Students Working Against Tobacco, a Clay County Department of Health organization designed to educate teens to not smoke and use tobacco products, has been traveling around the area in a specially-designed SWAT Truck. Here, SWAT members stopped at Keystone Beach in Keystone Heights as part of a four-day, multiple stop journey around Clay County. The SWAT tour includes Eagle Landing, Fleming Island's Pool Parks, O2B Kids Day Care in Fleming Island, local YMCAs, and other high teen-traffic areas. A special SWAT Summer Kickoff was held Thursday at the Fleming Island Gazebo off Town Center Boulevard. More events are scheduled throughout the summer. SWAT is a Clay County initiative designed to educate school-aged kids about dangers of tobacco use. Clay County has one of the state's highest teen tobacco use rates.

Clay Prepares-Are you Ready?

The Clay County Department of Health sponsored a disaster preparedness expo at the Fleming Island High School Teacher Training Center on Saturday. Representatives from the Clay County Emergency Response Team, Florida Division of Forestry including Smokey the Bear, Troop 577 Boys Scouts, Clay Transit, Salvation Army, Florida USVI, Poison Information Center, Students Working Against Tobacco, FEMA, Clay County Division of Emergency Management, Clay County Sheriff's Department, American Red Cross, National Weather Service, Clay County Animal Control, Clay County Poison Control, Clay County Fire and Rescue, Clay County Emergency Shelter Needs and Clay County Ham Radio all participated to educate local homeowners with hurricane and disaster preparedness information. Visitors also got random door prizes such as Weather Radios, Emergency Flashlights and a CERT Response BAckpack. Pictured is 2-year-old Isaac Stuart checking out some fire truck equipment.

American Cancer Society - Clay County Chapter, held a Fundraiser Ball Saturday at the Golf Club at Eagle Landing.A fun, western-themed event included food, dancing, silent auctions and music.We enjoy a great night and help a great organization continue its fight against Cancer. The food was catered by Outback Steak House. The guest were very generous and several thousand dollars were raised by the live and silent auctions.
Six World War II, D-Day veterans; Francis Heppner, of Fleming Island; Mario Dajruno, of St. Augustine; Dorman Clayton, of Lake City; Lionel Capoldo, of Lake City; Tom Santarsiero, of Gainesville, and Levi Starling, of Jacksonville, joined Major General Douglas Burnett, the Adjutant General of Florida, at Camp Blanding Saturday for a Sat., June 6, D-Day ceremony honoring the veterans of that invaded Normandy Beach in 1944.

Kings Of Leon - St. Aug. Amphitheatre
