Panthers win in OT: 4A-3 boys soccer semi final

  • Ridgeview fought to a 1-1 tie before winning 2-1 with a goal near the end of the second 10-minute overtime period against Orange Park High in the district 4A-3 semifinals Wednesday night at Fleming Island High School. Fleming Island won 8-0 against Middleburg in the second semifinal game. The championship game, RHS v FIHS, is scheduled for Thursday Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. at FIHS.

Broncos End Season With County Win: Middleburg 36-Clay 35

  • In a topsy-turvy game that saw the Middleburg Broncos build a 27-13 halftime lead, then get outscored 22-0 in the third quarter only to come back in the fourth with a key fumble recover, an 80 yard drive and a game-winning field goal to beat Clay County rival and 5A playoff-bound Clay High 36-35 Friday night at Clay High School. Bronco running back Kori Williams had an 80 yard TD scamper in the first half combined with a 99 yard fumble recovery and return to the Clay one yard line by linebacker Bobby Bassler that excited the packed stadium. Clay travels to Ponte Vedra for round one of the region playoffs on Nov. 18.

Katie Warren: Oakleaf High School's First Div. I Athletic Scholarship

  • Oakleaf High School athletics celebrated its first NCAA Division I athletic scholarship with softball first baseman Katie Warren signing on to play at University of North Carolina-Greensboro next school year. Warren was joined at Wednesday's signing ceremony by parents Lori and Glenn Warren, Oakleaf High coaches Christina Thompson and Jillian Waller and Oakleaf Junior High coaches Paul Marsh and Derald Sweatt. Marsh also coached Warren at the Jacksonville Storm club team. The Spartans of UNCG were 27-30 last year with a 12-11 record in the Southern Conference.

National Anti-Tobacco Advocate Leads "Butts" Pickup in Orange Park

  • Chad Bullock, executive director of HelloChange.org, a not for profit organization created to empower America's youth to withstand the ill-effects of tobacco products, joined a handful of Clay County students; ranging from Lakeside Elementary to Orange Park High School, in a "Billions of Butts" cleanup campaign. Bullock's group started at the Orange Park Town Hall with plastic bags and latex gloves with a goal to gather discarded cigarette butts near Kingsley Avenue. In a 90 minute trek, the group gathered nearly 18,000 butts while cleaning grass and sidewalks areas near a church, an elementary school, a city park and a donut shop. Bullock was also joined by Clay County Health Department officials.

Creekside Girls/Bartram Trail Boys Win District XC Titles

  • Creekside High's girls cross country got the first four spots, led by winner Kaitlin Rodriguez 19 minute, 12 second winning time, and Bartram Trail's boys team, led by a second and third place finish by Brandon Carver and Brexton Simonsen, respectively, took team titles at the FHSAA District 3A-3 Cross Country Championship races held at Ridgeview High School Saturday. Nease's Mac Reynolds won the boys race in 15:44. Bartram Trail finished ahead of Creekside, Fleming Island and Ridgeview for the boys race. Creekside finished ahead of Nease, Bartram Trail and Ridgeview in the girls race.

Blue Devils Beat Forrest: Bishop Kenny Wins-Clay in Playoffs

  • Clay High's Blue Devil football team got a special visit by CHS grad Cliff Avril, now a defensive end for the NFL's Detroit Lions, en route to a 41-28 district win over Nathan B. Forrest Friday night in Green Cove Springs. With Bishop Kenny's 20-17 win over Baker County, the Blue Devils finish as district runnerups and get into the regional playoffs. Clay running back Francy Emile scored two touchdowns in the first half with backfield mate Joe Cooper rambling 80 yards for a third score as Clay built a 21-7 halftime lead. Defensive back Wes Weeks snared two interceptions with Jeremy Stevens picking off a Forrest pass at the goal line with the Rebels threatening to score.

  • After two hard fought games that resulted in losses, the Fleming Island High School girls volleyball team succumbed to Tallahassee Lincoln in three games in a Region 7A-2 quarterfinal playoff game Tuesday night at Fleming Island High School. Fleming Island ends their season at 16 wins, nine losses. Games scores were 25-22, 26-24 and 25-15. Fleming Island beat Fletcher for the district 7A-2 title last week.
