Clay High Grad Visits DC/Obama Address

  • 4 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • As a political junky of sorts, Clay High graduate Bruce Butler was a bit awestruck sitting within 15 feet of First Lady Michelle Obama and in the same room as every political bigwig in the United States. “As I sat there, the sergeant at arms would be introducing the members as they arrived like the Supreme Court justices, the Cabinet members and then all the Congressional delegates,” said Butler, a 1999 graduate and now a federal game warden for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department. “I watch C-Span and CNN and all the news shows and hear and read about people like Eric Holder, attorney general, Justice Sotomayer, Senators John McCain and John Kerry, and all of a sudden, I was in the same room with them. It was quite daunting.” Butler recently returned from Washington DC and had a conversation in his Green Cove Springs home about witnessing President Obama's State of the Union Address. Rick Stoddard Visits Clay County

  • 68 photos for sale Buy a Photo
  • Nationally recognized anti-tobacco and anti-smoking advocate Rick Stoddard, who, in 2001, energized the nation with a Super Bowl commercial detailing how his wife was killed by tobacco, spoke Monday to teachers, school administrators and local politicians about the predatory tactics of the tobacco industry and its influence on youth. “When the tobacco industry states they will not advertise to youngsters in this country, they are lying, plain and simple,” said Stoddard, whose wife Marie died in 2000 at age 46 from tobacco-related cancers. “I travel all around the country talking to anyone trying to stop this and if I can stop one teenager from smoking, that’s a good day.” See Randy Lefko's blog on Stoddard's visit: http://jacksonville.com/interact/blog/sportsrgood/2010-01-04/rick_stoddard_brings_anti_tobacco_message_to_clay_county_school
